CPG NEWS - S&S Cycles Former President Joins Baja MotorsportsPosted Feb 2/2010
El Capitain Feb 02/10 - Brett Smith, former president of S&S Cycle, one of the leading names in American v-twin motorcycles, has been named head of Baja Motorsports U.S. operations. Smith currently is traveling in China where he is visiting Baja factories and component suppliers. Was recently hired after a brief break from S&S Cycles where he is the grandson of the founder, George Smith. Smith is charged with the GM duties of Baja Motorsports and holds the top position down from the Board of Directors of Baja. Baja was invested in by Techtronic Industries, Inc. (TTI) in 2004 who eventually purchaced Baja Outright in 2009. Techtronic Industries, Inc. (TTI) is based in Hong Kong and Smith will report directly to it's board of directors. Baja is currently building a strong team around Smith in order to quickly improve on many previous deffeciencies that left some Baja consumers from Big Box stores leaving the powersports industry due to inadequate service, lack of parts support and a product that was not living up to consumer expectations. Moving from a leader in the American V-Twin segment such as S&S to a Chinese producer who leads the industry in sales volumes but needs a kick in the pants in terms of operational support will be a good challenge for Smith. Having some experience in the development of such a market in Canada and previously meeting Brett on several occassions at S&S when I was in distribution I know the market is there for entry level "First Timers" and I also know that Brett has the knowledge and the passion to make Baja a better company, I wish him all the best in turning the operations and their reputation around.
